Saint Details:

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and is the real reason many people claim Irish heritage (real or aspirational) on March 17th!

Though he is Ireland’s most famous and popular saints, Patrick is not actually Irish himself--he was born in Roman Britain and was captured by Irish pirates when he was about fourteen years old and was taken to Ireland as a slave to tend sheep. Patrick was eventually reunited with his family but had a vision which compelled him to join the priesthood and travel back to Ireland to spread the Gospel.

Many people think a four-leaf clover is the symbol of Ireland, though they are mistaken! A four-leaf clover is considered lucky, certainly, but the symbol closely associated with St. Patrick, and of course to Ireland itself, is the shamrock. Patrick would use the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the people of Ireland, which was incredibly effective, as entire kingdoms of Ireland converted to Christianity after hearing Patrick speak.

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated throughout the world with Guinness, corned beef and cabbage, potatoes, Irish music, and general revelry. But you can extend your celebration by saying a portion of St. Patrick’s Breastplate or Prayer of Protection.
