This digital art print of Saint Barbara Ch'oe Yong-i is the perfect addition to your home decor or a great gift for birthdays, Confirmation, weddings, or Christmas.
Though not much is known about St. Barbara, and though she is often connected to the group of Martyrs of Korea rather than being singled out distinctly, she nonetheless has earned her sainthood. Barbara was very devout throughout her life, refusing to marry any man who was not Catholic and when she was eventually imprisoned for her faith, she would not give up her God or the names of any other believers.
St. Barbara was a young married lay woman in Korea at a time when Catholics faced great persecution and criticism. It is said that between 8,000 and 10,000 Korean Christians were killed during this time period and 103 of them were canonized in 1984. Barbara was among them.
The amazing thing about the Korean martyrs is that most of them taught themselves about Christianity and Catholicism. It is believed that when a Chinese priest finally managed to enter the country secretly, he found a population of Koreans who were already Catholic—they learned about their religion almost entirely through religious books.
